ABOUT CLUB SHAKAS

WE HOST SURF TRIPS & EVENTS, for female surfers.

We are a beginner to intermediate, female-only surfing group where everyone is welcome. It doesn't matter if you've never touched a board before, catching waves on your belly, cruising on your knees, or a fully-fledged whitewash warrior. As long as you're having fun, you're in.

Our surf trips are available both in Australia and abroad. We focus on fun, surf, and friendship. Surf progression is all part of the package, along with the Club Shakas approach, of continuous fun, laughing, and surf development, that can’t be found anywhere else.

The idea of starting a club

(WHERE NO ONE CAN SURF)

JUNE 2020

A bunch of chicks were chatting over coffee, saying they wanted to learn to surf but didn't know where to start, who to go with, and how to get over the intimidation factor of all the boys in the water. So they thought power in numbers, and decided to get out there with surfboards they had bought on the cheap or borrowed, started an Instagram chat called 'surfing chicks' and whoever wanted to join could.

They surfed whenever they could - at sunrise, before uni, during uni, after work, before work, lunch breaks, and sunset. They just wanted to be out in the surf as much as possible. From that point it just kept growing, the smiles kept getting bigger, they started to get a little bolder, and the willingness to keep getting out there was off the charts.

NOVEMBER 2020

At this point, the intimidation factor was dropping, surfing was now in their blood and they could confidently say "Yeah, I surf."

In November 2020 they got excited about what the club was doing to bring women together to connect, have fun, and participate in the amazing sport of surfing. So they entered themselves into a local entrepreneurship competition which made them re-name themselves to Club Shakas, create an official Instagram account, put a committee together (Amiee, Bridget, Kendall and Jahney), get a killer logo made, have a launch party, and surfed every Tuesday and Thursday.

The first official Club Shakas surf was a slow start, with only two people rocking up, but they didn’t care, they knew the magic of Club Shakas was only just getting started.

TODAY

From two to 30+ women coming along to a surf, they were dominating the boys in the water and really feeling the good vibes of bringing women together to have fun catching waves.

The magic continues to soar as we host surf trips both domestically and abroad, offer workshops, and have new members join every week and old ones return. We have done collaborations with FIFA Women’s World Cup Unity Pitch, Rip Curl, Urban List, Perth is OK, and many local brands.

Today we have Club Shakas Communities in Perth and the Gold Coast. Both are run by chicks who have no idea how to surf. Some might say the perfect group to run a surfing club where no one can surf, others may say it's a disaster waiting to happen. Either way, the club is creating a fantastic beat in the Australian surfing scene and we could not be more stoked.

We are all about having fun with new and old friends all while partaking in an incredible sport and buzzing community.

It doesn't matter if you're surfing on your belly, getting to your knees, or are a whitewash warrior, as long as you live by the rule of having fun first the rest will come...that's a Club Shakas guarantee.
